The Municipality of Shijak

Shijak

Shijak Municipality encompasses 4 administrative units, namely: Maminas, Xhafzotaj, Shijak and Gjepalaj. The new municipality administers a town (Shijak) and 26 villages. Shijak Municipality is bordered by Durrës Municipality to the north, west and south and by Vora and Tirana Municipalities to the east. Shijak is the seat of this municipality. The new municipality of Shijak extends over a flat and hilly terrain along River Erzen. Shijak is a town rich in water resources, whereas its economy is mainly directed to trade, apparel industry, processing industry, and manufacturing. These businesses operate mainly in service provision, trade, and less in production and construction. Shijaku is an area that has marked population increase during the last decades, as a result of migration from north-eastern regions of the country. Population increase and emigration have brought about the construction of numerous new buildings over the last 25 years which have been constructed with a concrete city planning. Agriculture is oriented towards high added value products, such as cultivating vegetables and plants, raising livestock and growing trees. Particular to this community is the cultivation of vegetables and plants and increasing expansion of vineyards, fruit trees and olive trees, and the cultivation of beans and melonson hilly areas. However, part of the agricultural land is still unexploited, whereasmany parcels of land are endangered by River Erzen large amounts of gravel have been removed from its bed, and as a consequence the natural barrier of the land on both banks of the river has been damaged.
