The Municipality of Patos

Patos

The city of Patos was initially built around 1949 as a support to workers and engineers employed in the oil tanker 'Patos-Marinza', which today produces the bulk of crude oil in the country. After the implementation of the Administrative-Territorial Reform of 2015, this municipality consists of 3 administrative units: Patos, Zharrëz and Ruzhdi and covers an area of 82.5 km2. Patos Municipality is bordered to the north and west with Fier Municipality, south to Mallakastra Municipality and to the east with Roskovec Municipality. The municipality lies along the hilly road that divides the Myzeqe field from the Gjanica River valley and is an integral part of the district of Fier. The new municipality includes in its territory the city of Patos and 18 villages, thus being characterized by a largely rural population (67 percent of the population). According to the civil registry for 2016, Patos Municipality has a population of 43,378 inhabitants. For a long period of time, the main economic source of the Municipality was the oil pipeline sector, but with the operation of foreign companies the number of domestic employees has fallen significantly.
