Mallakaster

The Municipality of Mallakastra is located in the southwestern part of Albania and is an integral part of the district of Fier. The new municipality consists of 9 administrative units of: Ballsh, Dukas, Greshicë, Aranitas, Hekal, Ngracani, Kut, Fratari and Selita and has in its administration one city and 41 villages. The town of Mallakastra has a surface of 329.19 km2. According to the civil registry for 2016, Mallakastra Municipality has a population of 43,875 inhabitants. Few years before across the municipality passed the main road connecting the city of Fier and Gjirokastra but with the construction of the national road Levan-Tepelenë, the Municipality lost its function as a transitional area. Mallakastra's economy is mostly based on agriculture as a result of several good climate conditions. The most common agricultural products are wheat and corn. Other characteristic agro product of the area are olive and cherry trees and viticulture. In Mallakastra is also known for its livestock farming, with a large number of farms that breed goats and enabling the production of high quality cheeses.
