The Municipality of Kruje

Kruje

Kruja Municipality is bordered by Kurbini Municipality to the north, Durrës Municipality to the west, Kamëz and Tirana Municipalities to the south and Mat and Klos Municipalities to the east. Kruja town is the seat of this municipality and it consists of 6 administrative units, namely: Kruja, Fushë-Krujë, Bubq, Nikël, Thumanë and Cudhi. The new municipality encompasses two towns and 50 villages. All administrative units are part of Kruja district and Durrës region. Kruja Municipality stretches over a flat and mountainous terrain. A transport corridor and North-South railway traverses the flat terrain. Moreover, on the flat terrain, there are considerable limestone reserves, which gave rise to the construction of a series of cement plants as well as lime production workshops. Such industries have a negative impact on the environment being the most polluting industries of the country. Unlike the flat zones, Kruja city, Kruja Mountain and the National Park of Qafë Shtama provide considerable recourses of cultural, mountain, religious and health tourism (spa at Bilaj village). Kruja city with the medieval castle, ottoman style bazaar, Ethnographic Museum and the National Museum “Gjergj Kastrioti Skënderbeu” is probably the most visited tourist attractions in Albania, whereas tourism has enabled maintenance of handicraft tradition for certain crafts at Kruja Bazaar. Both Kruja city and Fushë-Kruja town have as major employment sources apparel and footwear industries, whereas cement factory of Fushë-Kruja town ensures some considerable income.
