Gjirokaster

The Municipality of Gjirokastra is located in the southern part of Albania and along the Drino River valley, while the city of Gjirokastra (which is also the center of this municipality) is located on the northeastern slope of the Gjerë Mountain. The Municipality of Gjirokastra consists of 7 administrative units: Gjirokastra, Cepo, Lazarat, Picar, Lunxhëri, Odria and Antigone. The new municipality has under its administration a city and 48 villages. The capital of the municipality is the city of Gjirokastra. According to the civil registry for 2016, the Municipality of Gjirokastra has a population of 52,140 inhabitants. Gjirokastra is a very important economic center for Albania, close to the Kakavija Customs point, where there is a huge flow of passengers and trade exchanges with Greece. The bases of the economy are agriculture and livestock, generating income for farmers, both from direct trading and processing and marketing of their products. However, in Gjirokastra there are many industrial businesses, besides those in agro – food, focused on light industry (clothing and footwear), but also in the extraction and processing of decorative stones.
