The Municipality of Tepelene

Tepelene

The municipality of Tepelena is situated in the southeastern part of Albania on a surface of 431.2 km2, most of which is dominated by a mountain relief. This municipality is bordered to the north by Memaliaj municipality, to the east by Këlcyra municipality, to the south by Gjirokastra municipality and to the west by the municipalities of Himara and Selenica. Tepelene includes 4 administrative units: Tepelena, Tepelena Center, Lopës and Kurvelesh. The new municipality has under its administration one city and 24 villages. According to the civil registry for 2016, the Municipality of Tepelena has a population of 16,370 inhabitants. Main economic activity in rural areas is livestock farming and medicinal plants collection, while in the city, there is a high number of unemployed. However, the population has suffered from a deep migration movement, especially of youth towards big cities and coastal areas.
