The Municipality of Lezhe

Lezhe

Lezha Municipality is one of the 61 municipalities of the Republic of Albania which is located on the north-western part of the country. Lezha, extended on both banks of River Drin, surrounded by Kune and Vain lagoons and Shëngjin beach provides diversified opportunities for further development of tourism . Geographic area: Lezha is bordered by Vau i Dejës and Puka municipalities to the north, Adriatic Sea to the west, Mirdita Municipality to the east and Kurbin Municipality to the south. Lezha city is the seat of this municipality. This municipality consists of 10 administrative units, namely: Lezha, Shëngjini, Zejmeni, Shënkolli, Balldreni, Kallmeti, Blinishti, Dajçi, Ungreji and Kolshi. The new municipality administers two towns (Lezha and Shëngjini) and 65 villages. The municipality encompasses 10 administrative units (Lezha, Shëngjin, Shënkoll, Zejmen, Kallmet, Dajç, Blinisht, Balldre, Kolsh, Ungrej); it extends over a surface area of 1,588.4 km2and its population is 108,027 inhabitants, of which 50,000 live in Lezha city. Lezha is the main centre of this municipality. Lezha city, region and prefecture have been established in 385 B.C. by Dionysius of Syracuse. Over different time periods, Lezha city has played a particular role in the Illyrian-Albanian history. Its geographical position paired with its suburbs isone of the reasons why Lezha since antiquity has been an important trading and political-military centre. Lezha owing to Shëngjin outlet has facilitated numerous exchanges in different economic and cultural fields with countries abroad, affecting significantly the social development. This is one of the reasons why in this particular town during historic moments political and cultural activities of high national level have been organised, such as: “League of Lezha” in 1444 and “Arbëri Assembly” in 1703. It is a fact that this area has been inhabited continuously by Illyrian-Arbëresh-Albanian populations, at least since century VIII BC.
