Memaliaj

Memaliaj is a small industrial town created in 1946 to support the mining industry in the area. After the closure of the coal mine, it was created a stagnation of the economy of the city and many of its inhabitants left. Memaliaj's new municipality consists of six administrative units: Memaliaj, Memaliaj Fshat, Luftinjë, Buz, Wallachia and Qesarat. These administrative units are currently part of the Tepelena and Gjirokastra districts. In total, the municipality has under its administration one city and 53 villages. The city center is the town of Memaliaj. Memaliaj Municipality is located in South of Albania, bordered to the north by Mallakastra Municipality, east by Këlcyra Municipality, south by Tepelena Municipality, and west with Himara and Selenica Municipalities. Memaliaj Municipality has an area of 72.07 km2, which is crossed by the national road Levan - Tepelena. According to the civil registry for 2016, Memaliaj Municipality has a population of 20,978 inhabitants. The main economic activity of the Municipality are mostly focused on agriculture and livestock farming and fewer in small commercial services.
