The Municipality of Himare

Himare

The Municipality of Himara stretches along the entire Ionian coast as well as in the mountains of Labije in the part of the former municipality of Horez-Vranisht. The municipality after the administrative reform includes three administrative units: Himarë, Lukovë and Hore-Vranisht. Of the three, Horë-Vranisht is the most concerning unit as is situated in a mountain and steep relief and is not connected with the center of the municipality by a direct motorway route yet. The municipality covers a territory of 572 km2 and has in its administration one city and 24 villages. According to the Civil Registry for 2016, Himara Municipality has a population of 27,214 inhabitants. The most important sectors of the economy are tourism, and less is fishing, livestock and olive groves. Himara is among the main destinations in summer season due to its beautiful beaches. However, because of this concentration of the economic activities during summer, most of the businesses and services operate seasonally, generating temporary jobs. Consequently the population of Himara is characterized of a high migration the rest of the year.
