Vaui Dejës Municipality is located in the north-western part of Albania and is bordered by Shkodra municipality both to the north and west, Fushë Arrëz Municipality to the east and Puka and Lezha Municipalities to the south. Vaui Dejës town is also the seat of this municipality. This municipality consists of 6 administrative units: Vau Dejës, Bushat, Vig-Mnele, Hajmel, Temal, Shllak. The newly established municipality administers a town and 47 villages. Based on the Civil Registration Office, this municipality counts 48.966 inhabitants. The new municipality stretches over a surface area of 499.09 km2, and its density is 98.11 inhabitants/km2. Vau i Dejës Municipality comprises of 5 communes, whose main economic activity is agriculture, though the area is rich in water resources. Vau i Dejës hydro power plant is also located in this municipality, as are HEC Ashta 1 and HEC Ashta 2, recently constructed via private concessions. Bushati commune, recently merged into the new municipality, is a well-known area for agricultural productions and for middle-scale vegetable export. Moreover, Shllak and Temal communes are situated on the other bank of the Lake Vau i Dejës, and have no historical connection with the new municipality. These two communes are exceptionally poor in land, due to a considerable part of it being flooded by Lake Vau i Dejës. What is particular of this Municipality is that there are significant water surfaces, the largest of which is Lake Vau i Dejës, where the hydro power plant is located; River Drin, which follows its usual flow from HPP’s dam, as well as River Gjadër, which bifurcates from the first river approximately 1 km on the Southeast of Vau i Dejës town. Nature tourism development marks a great opportunity for the economic development of this area, for around the Lake Vau i Dejës there are some of the most ancient castles and churches in the Balkans, which cherish all historical and archaeological values. Vau i Dejës town dates back to 1127.
