Malësia e Madhe Municipality is located in the north-western part of the country and is bordered by Montenegro to the north, and Shkodra Municipality to the south. Kopliku town is the seat of this municipality. Burreli city is the seat of this municipality. This municipality consists of 6 administrative units: Kopliku, Gruemira, Kastrati, Kelmendi, Qendra and Shkreli. The new municipality administers two towns (Bajram Curri and Fierza) and 56 villages. Based on the Civil Registration Office, this municipality counts 53,918 inhabitants. The new municipality stretches over a surface area of 951.01 km2, and its density is 56.69 inhabitants/km2 and based on the Civil Registration Office is 32.41 inhabitants/km2. Malësia e Madhe is rich in natural beauties, such as that of Lake Shkodra and mountain tourism destinations of Vermosh, Razma and Boga. The main economic activities for the inhabitants of this area are tourism, farming and agriculture. Tourism development has encountered various obstacles due to lack of infrastructure. The road axis Hani iHotit- Tamarë- Vermosh- PlavëGuci, which is one of the most important ones, known differently as “The Alps Road”, would improve the life of the inhabitants in the area and would give an impetus to its mountain tourism development. Malësia e Madhe Municipality includes 5 rural areas whose main activities are agriculture, cultivation of medical plants and farming. There are also few inhabitants that are engaged with fishing. A considerable percentage of the population has emigrated over the years to the United States of America and to England. This is a rapidly increasing phenomenon, especially among youth. Malësia e Madhe Municipality encompasses large forest surfaces, though the well-management of the forestry would ensure a significant income for the inhabitants of the area in the future.
