Kurbini Municipality is located in Central Albania and is bordered by Lezha and Mirdita Municipalities to the north, Mat Municipality to the east, Kruja and Durrës Municipalities to the south and the Adriatic Sea to the west. Based on the Census 2011, within the territory of Kurbin Municipality there are 46,291 inhabitants, whereas according to the Civil Registration Office there are 72,987 inhabitants. It extends over a surface area of 269.03 km2, and its population density is 172 inhabitants/km2. The new municipality consists of four administrative units namely: Kurbini, Mamurrasi, Miloti and Fushë-Kuqja. There are three towns within this municipality Kurbini, Miloti and Mamurrasi and 28 villages. All administrative units are part of Kurbin district and Lezha region. Kurbini town, which includes one third of the population of the new municipality, is a former industrial area and was erected as a town around the superphosphate and copper enrichment factories, both of which were closed down a long time ago. The apparel industry has replaced these factories as the main employment source in the town. The rest of the municipality is an agricultural zone. Patok Lagoon is considered of high importance and thus it has been developed as a fishing zone and as a daylong tourism attraction. Based on their use and attributes, in the area there are cultivated medical and aromatic plants which contain active substances and essences . Kurbin has a diversified relief, with fields found on the western part, with mountains on the eastern part and Mat Valley on the northern part. The population comes from different parts of Albania due to inflows from many regions during communism. Secondary data indicate that this municipality faces several inherent challenges towards the economic and social development process within its territory, among which can be identified the creation of a stable economic activity that increases employment opportunities; environmental protection, tourism development due to lack of infrastructure, including waste water pipelines; maintenance of drainage and irrigation infrastructure seems a necessity for this zone; extension of urban waste removal service, etc.
