The Municipality of Fushe Arres

Fushe Arres

The new municipality of Fushë-Arrëz is bordered by Tropoja Municipality to the north, Vau i Dejës Municipality to the west and Puka and Mirdita Municipalities to the south-west. It is bordered by Kukës Municipality to the east. FushëArrëz town is the seat of this municipality. The new municipality extends over a surface area of 540.42 km2, and its population density is 21.55 inhabitants/km2 based on the Civil Registration Office and 13.70 inhabitants/km2 based on the Census 2011. Fushë Arrëz Municipality administers 5 administrative units: Fushë-Arrëz, Fierzë, Blerim, Qafë-Mali and Iballë. The newly established municipality administers a town and 35 villages. FushëArrëz Municipality is among the poorest municipalities of Albania due to its rough mountainous terrain, non-exploitation of the agricultural land and lack of employment opportunities. The main income sources for the inhabitants are the natural recourses of FushëArrëz, mainly exploitation of copper minerals and forests. However, concessionary contracts for these recourses (often contested ones) by foreign companies have not brought about any development for this area. Regarding forestry, forest have been inflicted the same damage as in other regions of the country, which have been exploited based on no criteria or further processing for adding its values, and therefore it stimulates no economic productivity. Agriculture and farming are also important sectors for the villagers' lives, though their production supports only their family economy for satisfying family consumption.
